Gloucester School Committee hears senior exit data and leaves a $1.5 million budget gap unresolved ahead of a city council vote. At the June 10 meeting at Gloucester High School Library, Superintendent Ben Lummis told the committee that a $300,000 increase from the mayor and city council, plus a one-time $103,000 pavement repair covered by the city, still leaves the district roughly $1.5 million short, with a bottom-line figure of $5,778,000 still to be closed. Lummis noted the district is already down 20.7 positions from fiscal year 2023-24 before any new cuts take effect.

Guidance Director Laura Carlson reported that 62 percent of the Class of 2026 are heading to four-year colleges, with six students — the largest cohort — bound for UMass Amherst, and that 78 percent of surveyed seniors named school counselors as their most valuable planning resource. Wellspring nonprofit staff reported 20 Gloucester High School alumni in their scholarship program, backed by $200,000 over four years. The committee tabled a proposed letter supporting retirement-plus pension-buyback legislation pending further review of differing House and Senate versions, and voted unanimously to enter executive session for collective bargaining discussions.

The city council votes on the school appropriation June 16.
